Les Jeal Memorial Gala
Great Harwood swimmers with trophy
Accrington Swimming Club & Great Harwood Otters under 11yr old swimmers competed for the Inaugural 'Les Jeal Memorial Trophy' on Monday 14th of November at Hyndburn Leisure Centre, the event was set up in memory of Les Jeal who was a Masters swimmer with Accrington Swimming club and whose brother-in-law coaches at Great Harwood Otters and will be held annually alternating venues between the two club's bases. Over 50 swimmers competed in the gala many who hadn’t competed in a gala before.
The Trophy for the event, kindly donated by Les's wife Dawn, was presented by two of Les's friends and fellow Master's Swimmers Chris Hollis & Terry Worswick and both young teams wanted to win the huge trophy.
A packed gallery of parents cheering all the swimmers on were equally matched by the teams on the poolside cheering their team-mates on. At the end of 37 events the scores which had been nip and tuck all night were totted up, Great Harwood narrowly claimed the trophy winning 115pts to 103pts, but the real winner on the night were the parents and children who all thoroughly enjoyed the evening.
Accrington Swimming Club can't wait for the return fixture, which will be held at Great Harwood Otter Swimming club’s Mercer Hall Leisure Centre pool, it promises to be another fantastic night showcasing the swimming skills of both clubs younger swimmers.
